Sigma Chi Fraternity’s annual Derby Days fundraiser for Children’s Miracle Network raised an estimated $2,000, according to Derby Days Chairman Russ Morgan.
“It’s a lot of work for all of the girls and guys all week,” Morgan said. “Everyone works hard to raise as much as we can. I feel like it’s a great cause.”
Members of the fraternity have worked throughout the semester to raise money for the event. Money has been gathered through donations collected at traffic lights, selling CMN balloons, and selling advertisements to be put in an ad book given out to event attendees.
Events are held throughout the week in which sororities help bring in donations and compete for bragging rights. Those events include goofy games (where teams competed in a series of relay races filled with shaving cream, silly string, and eggs), most CMN balloons purchased, the search for a derby hat hidden on campus, and a dance competition.
Concluding the week was the dance competition at the Saenger Theatre. Sororities practice dance routines for weeks, even more rigorously the week of the event, in order to do well.
“It’s a very rewarding experience to know that you’re making a difference in a family’s life,” Derby Days committee member Cameron Macon said. “We’re all just glad to be a part of it.”
